Want to learn a bit more about Said first? Check out our Q&A below as he shares a few of his favourite local eats, drinks and moments.
What’s your name, your hometown, and where do you lead tours?
My name is Said Mwanja living in the Arusha Region and I’ve been working as a Chief Experience Officer on the mountain for four years.
What is one must-try local dish and/or drink?
Machalari and Mbege! Machalari is a local banana stew from the Chaga tribe living on the slope of Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s a green banana mixed with spices and onions, carrot, tomato, green pepper, cooking oil, salt, water and meat. Mbege is a local drink made of fermented banana mixed with finger millet porridge.
Can you share one “secret” not-to-be-missed spot on your tour and why it’s so special?
It’s not a secret but the best spot is the summit itself. It’s very special because it is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. (Just fyi, that means it stands alone and is not part of a larger mountain range.)
After travelling with you, what three words would you want travellers to use to describe your country?
Tanzania the Land of Kilimanjaro
What books/novels would you recommend to travelers who want to escape to your country via literature?
Lonely Planet is a great guide book that helps explain our area and its highlights (beyond what I can personally show you firsthand).
What is YOUR favourite place to travel to (not including your region!)?
Zanzibar because of its brilliant beach, historical sites, and it being a spice island.
