Five things you probably didn’t know about Trekking Mont Blanc
It’s challenging, incredibly scenic, and offers you a chance to walk through several countries in just over a week. Read on to find out what you might not know.
If you’re reading this post, you probably already know a few things about Trekking Mont Blanc. After all, it is one of the most famous treks in the world. It’s challenging, incredibly scenic, and offers you a chance to walk through several countries in just over a week. What you might not know is how the food will impress you, why Chamonix is an amazing place to explore, and that there is a chance for a Spa day halfway around the trek. Read on to find out what you probably didn’t know about Trekking Mont Blanc with G Adventures!
1. Mountain Refugio food is the best kind of food.
Walking through France, Italy, and Switzerland means you get to experience three amazing cuisines as you make your way around the mountain. Can you tell where you are based on the food available? Yes you can! Being able to stop for lunch in a beautiful traditional wooden building with boots and poles piled high outside just adds a whole new dimension to this famous hike and the views are consistently breathtaking. Whether it’s a simple homemade soup or a steaming bowl of homemade pasta, you really are in for a treat wherever you stop — and it will certainly get you ready for the rest of your trek that day. Being in the Alps, cheese features heavily, and it is as local as it can possibly get — you can hear the cowbells chiming throughout your hike.
Your CEO will know all the best places to stop, and the dishes to try, including a life changing hot chocolate experience in Switzerland. (When it’s too thick to stir with a spoon, you know it’s going to be special.)
2. Trekking as a group makes the experience extra special
The best part of taking a small group tour with G Adventures is that you will meet like minded people from all over the world, and get to know them over the 10 days you spend together. My group was a complete mix of ages, nationalities, and trekking experience and it was absolutely brilliant. There is something about sharing a challenge like this trek that makes you connect with someone on a different level. We shared it all: Sore legs, bottles of wine, and many, many laughs. Plus, our CEO seemed to know everything we could possibly want more information about — from the flora and fauna around us to the best lunch order at the next stop!
3. You can have a Spa Day half-way around the Trek.
Let me repeat that, “YOU CAN HAVE A SPA DAY HALF WAY AROUND THE TREK.” Once you arrive in the beautiful Italian town of Couymayer where you’ll spend two nights looking up at the mountains, you have a well earned rest day to spend as you wish. Here you can explore the town and sample the amazing Gelato, visit Roman ruins nearby, or even venture out for another hike if you want to challenge yourself. Or — possibly the best optional activity there is — you can visit a gorgeous Italian Spa and rest those tired legs. Lying in a warm bubbling Jacuzzi pool, gazing back up at the mountain you’ve been trekking on is a special experience and not one you’ll forget in a hurry. You will never have felt cleaner or more pampered. After that, we were refreshed and ready to get those hiking boots the next morning!
4. Wine and beer tastes better with a view
Is there a better feeling than taking off a pair of hiking boots after a long day? Yes, it’s taking off said hiking boots and kicking back with a local glass of whatever you fancy and a gorgeous view. Local beers and wines, homemade hot chocolates, strong Italian coffee — we tried them all! On most days, you start hiking early and reach your accommodation for that evening by late afternoon. This gives you a couple hours to relax before dinner, reflect on the hike you’ve had that day, and make the most of the local treats on offer. This is not a trek to be rushed, and these moments to relax and enjoy the scenery when your hiking is over for the day are just as much a part of the experience as the trek itself.
5. Chamonix is more than just the start and end of your trek
Chamonix, the beautiful town at the foot of Mont Blanc, is a wonderful place to explore before or after your tour. I encourage you to take the extra time to soak in those mountain views, and perhaps take the Aiguille Du Midi Cable Car to 3,800m above sea level — one of the highest cable cars in the world. You’ll be walking around the mountain, so why not see it from (nearly) the top? The car has been running for over 60 years and the view from the top across the Swiss, French, and Italian Alps is truly breathtaking. There’s even a restaurant at the top if you fancy an unforgettable breakfast or lunch and you can watch the ice climbers beginning their long ascent to the summit of this impressive mountain.
Heights not your thing? Chamonix has something for everyone! It’s the perfect place to simply stroll around, grab a coffee, and soak in the mountain air and atmosphere. In the summer, floral displays across the town contrast beautifully with the snow capped peaks behind, and there are amazing restaurants around every corner.
